Help - What's a Good Ice Cream Maker?

Wanted:  Advice on Ice Cream Makers

I had a comment on my Excalibur 3900 dehydrator post concerning investment in an ice cream maker.  I am asking for everyone's help here because I'm just not the ice cream loving type, it's OK but in small quantities and only when soft and freshly made (or a Dairy Queen vanilla dip cone dunked in chocolate).  My milkshakes are admittedly pitiful, more like chocolate milk with mushy lumps (yes, I like it that way).

Here is the comment- any suggestions?
I like soft icecream during those 90 plus summer temps, but the price has totally gotten out of hand at fast food places. They all want $3 for a milkshake anymore. I can almost buy a gallon of milk for that! So I'm thinking of buying an icecream maker. Anybody know of a good inexpensive one? It would be great if it also made SOFT icecream. I don't know what goes into making soft icecream though or if it's possible to do at home, let alone for a reasonable price. If not, I'll settle for regular ice cream.

This comment was made on my Facebook page- I don't think it's a cheap model but I'm sure very good. " The Cuisinart one is great, but doesn't do soft serve...technically...you could just under freeze it somewhat. Inly makes a quart, but fast and easy. I just keep the insert in the freezer all the time."

i miss the yummy ice cream from my grandpa's old wooden crank maker...i can't remember what brand i have but it's electric and while the ice cream i make in it is pretty good, it's just not as good as my grandpa's!

I've never had an ice cream maker - so I don't know which is best!

Ours was always dipped in Butterscotch. ;o)

Don't know much about ice cream machines, but a google search will bring up a lot of them, including reviews that might help. Good luck!

I have a little 1-quart Rival electric ice cream maker that I bought at Target a few years back for less than $30. It's the kind where you keep the base in the freezer. It makes ice cream in 20 minutes or less and doesn't require any salt. The ice cream is soft when it's freshly made but does harden up in the freezer.
Now, about that soft serve "ice cream." Have you ever looked at the ingredients in that stuff?!? It is mostly chemicals! Blech!!

I won't be much help, I'm afraid -- we have two ice cream makers and both are over 50 years old. Lol. Hoping your other visitors will have some good information for you.

Thank you for sharing at Rural Thursdays this week!

Oh I know. When I was a kid we lived in Aurora, MO and every summer holiday we'd get out the plastic webbed lawn chairs and ice cream maker. The men would crank it while the kids played. It was soooo good, right then and there. Not the same after it was frozen but that one night- magic!

Oh that sounds good!

No, no, no (hiding my eyes with my hands) It CAN'T BE! Not my dunk cone! Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

You know what I'd call them? Seasoned, to Perfection!

Thanks anyway, it was nice for you to comment! Maybe you'll decide to get one after the verdict is in.

The price is right! I was just reading about soft serve. It seems that it's just a matter of a using a slighty higher temperature and milk with less fat, so it's actually healthier if done right. I'm guessing that big companies must use more preservatives in it than hard ice-cream though because of the temperature difference introducing more bacteria to the soft stuff. But if you make it yourself you don't have to worry about that!

When my kids were little my Dad bought an ice cream maker much like the first image here. It was a lot of work for very little ice cream but it was so good.
My favorite milk shake is a jamocha shake from Arby's. A small one is 1.19 and more than enough. Yum!

I'm lovin' my Kitchen Aid Ice Cream maker attachment! If you already have a Kitchen Aid Mixer, I think this is the way to go ~ not an additional contraption on the counter! :~P

I don't know if my friend does, but I have a Kitchen Aid. I'm going to look this up!

Oooooo, look at this. A two quart ice cream maker that attaches to the Kitchen Aid. Their website has a video but I found images here. It looks like it ranges from the $60s on up depending on where you purchase.
