Elderberry and Hops

I've  been wanting an elderberry bush for quite some time
so we can make our own jellies and of course elderberry wine.
My husband came across one yesterday while purchasing his
beer making supplies (he brews using grains).

My brother in law was a little concerned.  He said all
we need now is a window seat-- a reference to
Arsenic and Old Lace, an old Cary Grant movie!

The beer and wine store sells hops rhizomes each spring
and my husband wants to grow his own so we
will be putting up some structure to hold the vines.

Now I am on a search for Jerusalem Artichokes (sun chokes).

I think I told earlier that I had a walnut tree, an elderberry bush and a big patch of day-lilies out along the road and the state and the power company sprayed and killed them ALL!

I have hops coming up that I planted this year and they seem to grow quickly.
Be careful with the chokes as they are hard to keep under control and get rid of and can be a nightmare though they are a good plant otherwise.

I was just reading "The Armada" about the Spanish Armada. The author said that the English fleet stayed in the channel when they ran out of food, and stayed in the channel when they ran short of powder and shot, but when they ran out of beer they all came into port right away to replenish. Beer making is still a useful skill these many hundreds of years later!

Careful where you plant the sunchokes as they will spread probably more than you want them to. They are tall flowers to so putting them against a wall or fence will work well for them. Even when you think you have dug them all up you always seem to miss some of them.

Arsenic and Old Lace seemed hilarious when I was a kid. Now I watch it and can't get over how bad Cary Grant overacted his part.
