Have you seen the Whizbang Chicken Plucker on line
and wondered if it is all they say it is? I can assure you
that it is and we will be processing our own meat birds
as we move forward with increasing the flock.
My husband's boss built from the plans in
Anyone Can Build a Tub-Style Mechanical Chicken Plucker
by Herrick Kimball. Tom welded the plate on the bottom which
spins while the rubber fingers do their job. All the specialty parts can
be ordered on line. I have a link to the website below.
We don't have the motor attached while it sits outside; however,
it bolts to the side of the frame and uses a power cord connected
to a switch which is attached to one of the side posts.
After scalding, but not yet cleaning the chicken, you
turn on the plucker and drop 2-4 chickens inside while
spraying water into the tub. As the chickens spin around
inside the tub, the fingers will pull out the feathers which
will be washed out the gap at the bottom, all in a few seconds,
about 15-20 seconds.
When the chickens are plucked you turn off the power.
This contains the complete instructions for making the plucker
and instructions on how to process the chickens. There are also
tips on scalding and cleaning as well.

We built one... But ours was a fail.
Good luck I hope it works well for you. The chicken has been in the news quite a bit-- and it's not sounding good for store boughten chicken.
My husband's boss uses this one all the time so we know it works well. That's why we are doing meat birds soon. Hopefully we won't get the flu around here but when I read about sending out chickens to China for processing, that's where all the problems are so I don't want anything to do with it. They will probably come back as a Product of the US since they were sourced here and will be packaged here, only processed in China.
We have been thinking about building one ourselves! Good to know somebody has had success with it! Yeah that whole chicken thing is scary! Time to start raising our own!
I thought you had it hooked up to the 8N for a second, now that would be the coolest thing, a 3pt hitch chicken plucker! I have heard of people using them around here and never heard of problems. I just skin the birds as we aren't selling them.
I guess I will have to do it the old fashioned way if it comes to that, as we have no chicken plucker. I did it as a child. Can't say I enjoyed it though.
This one is just a loan since my husband's boss won't be raising them this year due to some property issues. If it works out we'll make one too. Our neighbors have goats and want to get back into chickens too so we thought we'd do it together. They have huge chicken houses that his mom used to run, these are LARGE. If they get them cleaned up we could get a lot of chickens though there. They also gave us their bee hives that we will be getting ready for next season.
that is quite the contraption. We don't do much chicken plucking around here. My ex-husband used to hunt waterfowl but he would breast them out as they weren't worth plucking.
