After the Storm

We spent several hours sitting around the fire of burning brush
from the storm the other day. Taylor is fast becoming a pyro
with the help of Pops and our neighbor, Laura!  They
cut and dragged, stacked and pushed brush into piles to keep
the fires going into the wee hours of the night.

Our neighbor borrowed a dump trailer and delivered lots of mulch
from the large horse farm up the way. The farm is replacing all their mulch which
has aged about five years, making it perfect for our garden use.
They were having difficulty finding places to spread it
until my husband stopped by asking if they had any extra.  It turns out our neighbor also
stopped by on her way home from work.  They worked out a deal where the farm
would load the trailer and our neighbor would deliver to us.

That's one thing about living out here, everyone seems to want to help
each other, no matter how easy or hard the job is.

We have not even made a dent in the amount of mulch that is
available. We'll have mulch for years. So far the pile is as high as my waist!

The garden seem to be coming back.  We have a blackberry
although it is not in good shape. There are more to follow though.
I just planted this one so I expect next year will be good.

The tomatillos and squash are coming back, tomatoes
and cukes too.  It rained again today so garden work will have
to wait until tomorrow but things are looking up!

Your garden looks great! And I envy you all that mulch. That is fantastic!

We mulch kitchen peelings and grass clippings and leaves.
And rabbit manure when we can get it. :-)

Have a blessed Sunday!

The neighbor's where I used to get an occasional bucket of "donkey dew" is retiring from farming. Don't know where I'll get such things now.

Free mulch, you can't beat that!

Hi Kathy, I hate to see so many trees damaged by high winds. Our Village lost several trees in the last big storm two months ago and they think it is because of all the rain in the winter and the roots were just not stable enough. Glad to see the garden is recovering, it is amazing how plants and animals bounce back after something like this. Glad your house was okay. Susie x

Don't you hate to see all those downed trees having to be burned up?
But working together and getting it done is also important. Good thing you're getting all the mulch...is it mulch or compost?
Either way...all good stuff important in the garden.
I'm hoping to rake up some of the grass from the outlying areas... and put it into the compost this week.
I saw the neighbor measuring the fence off on Saturday...I hope he gets it up quickly.
It's also fun to work with the grand kids...Taylor is going to be pretty knowledgeable about all this when she is older.
Our little Bree LOVES working in the garden and around the chickens.
HAVE A GREAT WEEK!
Pat

We're still burning. Most everyone is getting their places cleared up except one guy. I'll imagine we'll end up cleaning anything up that is along the road.
