Calling All Chicken Owners
What is This?
My young Buff Orpingtons are laying little eggs now,
hard as rock little eggs.
When you break one open, it tends to splinter
with ever so tiny shell pieces falling into the bowl.
I decided to crack open only the top
or bottom as you see here.
Then I peel away the shell,
leaving an almost intact membrane.
I tear it open and pour out the egg.
Strange.
I hope this changes.

I'm new to the egg scene as I've only had chickens about a year.
I did have one chicken that started laying very delicate, odd shaped eggs...when you tapped it with your finger nail...and made a 'tink-tink' like the sound of a fine china cup.
I gave them crushed egg shells to boost calcium. Everything seems good now.
You don't want to do this for a chicken that is young though, too much of it could damage the kidneys.
I would imagine this will change as they mature.

That's bizarre. How Long have they been laying?
Wish I could help. I've read that chickens just starting laying will often lay all sorts of different type of eggs, so may that is it?
Hope someone who knows a lot will give you a better answer.

About 3-4 weeks, very hard shells.
Thanks! In the past we've had some without shells, just semi soft things, when they are first starting to lay and then they firm up.
We've often had the membrane. As far as I know, there is nothing wrong.
