Center Block Y Seams Part A&B DONE!!! (oops!)

(PS: Oops! I goofed- I have to take off my corners and re-size the very center, it's too big. I misread the instructions to square up to 13 1/4 reading it as 13 3/4. At least I am no farther and can fix it pretty quickly.)

OK, it's not perfect, but I hadn't counted on that in the least bit; however, my Y seams are DONE!!!! I thought there were only 8 of them but no, there were sneaky ones too. I still don't have the hang of it. I'm getting closer though- I'm still a beginner when it comes to fancy piecing!

The Y seams are on the outer corner pieces that look like a crown. I made two of the crownish pieces with a triangle for the Y seam. Then a square was pieced between them followed by triangles on either side.

I started with center square Part A.

Then added the corners (part B)

The pieces I completed tonight pieced to the center square (parts A & B ) between the red and green spotty corners. Once all of them were attached I had a bigger square. I had to play around with them to get it to fit, as I mentioned, they were all over the place.

I still need to square it off to 18 1/2 inches and then add the next border before the flying geese border that goes between the other 8 blocks.

This is what it should look like when I have completed it- based on the sample hung on the quilt shop wall during our block of the month meetings.

Wow, your quilt block is GORGEOUS. Oh, and I would love to take a quilting class at a shop some time. When your quilt is finished, post a pic here :) :) Have a great weekend. Love and hugs from the ocean shores of California, Heather :)

Thanks. I would recommend taking a class. I thought I was but I was wrong, it was this block of the month. That tells you how green I was (especially since I didn't sew). Hopefully now that the nightmare block is over, the rest of it will go much faster. I also have material for the coordinating pillow cases and shams.

Nice looking quilt, Kathy. I *hope* to make a full-sized quilt one day.... so far I've only made a quilted wall-hanging and a tied quilt.

I love the colors you are using for this project. Can't wait to see it when it is finished! :o)

Oh! You're doing the Tonga quilt!! I have drooled over than countless times and scolded myself away from yet another BOM that can't get attention for at least a year. Sooo nice to see you share it at BOMs Away. :D That is going to be one breath-taking quilt.

Yes, the Tonga. I saw the demo hanging on the wall and thought it would be perfect for my spare bedroom which works with all the colors plus the corner log cabin design. The thing I am also struggling with is how to cut the fabric. While the BOM was going on, just for 8 months, they gave us our fabric packets for that particular block free if we completed the prior month's block and showed up to listen to her sales pitch. Of course everyone bought something!!!! Now I am on my own and there is no cut sheet. I am afraid I'll not lay it out correctly and be short on fabric. I've cut out notebook paper pieces in the various sizes and laid them on the fabric before cutting to find the optimal placement so I have as little scrap as possible. I do have extra fabric. I bought the king extension just for that purpose but have no intention of making a king. I also have the cases and sham material to fall back on. It's not hard except for that pesky Y seam. I hear I have to be extremely careful with the log cabin design too because it is cut on the bias to piece with the main section. They recommended putting something on it- something that stabilizes seams but I don't remember what it's called. It's fabric you sew behind it.

I'm not square on the middle block!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am not going to tear it apart and start over, I am a little off in a few places. I don't know why I didn't see it. This means I can't square off the center to 18 1/2 SO . . . hubby is helping me figure out how to fake it out. He's a carpenter and makes cabinets and complicated customer work. We'll try messing with the two borders and hope to not lose points, at least not too much. Worse comes to worse, if it just can't be worked around I can always take it apart. All the other blocks were so fun. I don't care for this one at all.

I think I know what I did. I did not square the inner square to 13 1/4, I squared to 13 3/4, a problem I can run into now and again because I don't wear glasses to sew but need them to read the instructions that are on the side table! In small type 1/4 isn't much different than 3/4.
