From Fluff to Feathers on a Roost

The kids are growing up fast! One day they are just a little yellow ball of fluff and the next thing you know they're ready for the roost, feathered out and finding their place in the pecking order.
These little Buffs are a curious lot.  As soon as they see you walking the coop becomes a hub of excitement. They jump and fly, bash into each other and darn near crush each other trying to get as close as possible.

I remember when . . . .
Look how cute, both of them.

Pretty soon they will be one these big fat hens.
Right now they are still sectioned off although one of our little gals, probably the past escapee, has somehow been sneaking out into the main coop area.   She just walks around.  No one bothers her but she can't figure out how to get back in with her buddies before we show up.

Mr. Araucana is none too thrilled.  Now, he's not mean or aggressive to them but check out that look in his eye.  He knows what we do now.  He knows one of the little gals is really a guy!   He's a pretty assertive guy too, feeling all important with that tiny comb setting atop his head.   See him below, about center and facing to the left?

This is not a good thing at all.   Someone's going to have to back down or get along.  Time will tell.

  1. I'm guessing the new guy will become a '2nd Lieutenant'. At least if your Araucana has anything to say about it. :o)

  2. Wow, they really do grow fast. What's it been two or three weeks?

    1. They are only a month and 1/2 old, at least since they have been here. We got them March 31 and they couldn't have been more than a couple weeks old.

  3. They DO grow up fast! It seemed that my Buffs grew a lot quicker than the Barred Rocks from before. Good luck with your second rooster. We ended up with two and finally gave one away, they were ganging up on the hens! Bad Boys!!

    1. I worry about them fighting. The last time we had two it was like a cock fight, well actually, it was a cock fight.

  4. They do grow up fast. I can't wait for mine to finish growing. So I can bring them home from Heidi's.

  5. I am really looking forward to their eggs. Of course these are meat chicks too. We've never processed our own chicken before so I guess I'll have to get over that.

    1. We sure will! If they fight maybe I can convince my husband to make separate pens and keep the two areas separate. I don't know if we have enough room, not space wise but dirt wise. We are so rocky it's hard to put up fencing.

    1. Yes, I agree. We lost a couple of chicks last time we had to merge two age groups. I tried to rescue one but the poor little thing didn't make it.

    1. I'm glad it's only 2, last time we got several. They were supposed to be pullets and the farm supply store did a poor job, mixing them with straight runs. We won't buy chicks from that particular store anymore.

    1. He is! He's gotten a bit keyed up lately. He never was aggressive and now if I am talking to the girls in the pen he comes over and gives me a jump and flaps his wings. Not such a big deal if I was standing up but I'm on the ground and the coop is raised so he is at head level. We're going to have a "talk" about this behavior!

    1. Thank you! I haven't been participating on your blog lately- I still love it but have been too busy to be creative! I tell everyone about your crocs (crock) display! LOL, how funny.

  12. No chicks yet this year -- I've sectioned the roosters off from the hens to give them a rest -- lol. Your rooster is so pretty -- will be interesting to see how the other little guy handles being Number 2. :)

Thank you so much for sharing at Rural Thursdays this week.

  13. Did you ever wonder why people ever began referring to cowardly folks as being chicken? I've yet to meet a cowardly chicken! They tend to be much more like your mean-eyed rooster, full of fight.

  14. Love your Araucana. Is that the rumpless breed? I think they are so pretty.... I got 16 Black Copper Marans chicks. Well, 11 of them turned out to be roosters! Aah! I wanted to cry.

    1. No, it's not rumpless, it's the result of a very henpecked rooster! He used to have a very pretty tail but the ladies, well, he bothers them so they pull out his tail feathers! LOL. I just looked up Black Copper Manans and they are beautiful- and the eggs are dark brown to almost blackish? Very unusual. Sorry about the rooster numbers. That's way too many!
